Another question from a visitor

A recent visitor to our website asked for information on Nevada's Veteran Tax Exemption and Disabled Veteran Tax Exemption.

To summarize, Nevada offers veterans’ exemptions and disabled veterans’ exemptions to veterans who served a minimum of 90 days during a period of war as defined in Nevada Revised Statutes (NRS) 361.090.  The veteran must have received an honorable discharge or certificate of satisfactory service or is still serving.  The amount of exemption varies depending on whether the veteran uses it on personal property or their vehicle and annually is adjusted based on the CPI.

For 2008, the maximum allowable personal property tax exemption was $22,000 (100%), $16,500 (80-99%), $11,000 (60-79%) or $2,200 for any other veteran.  If they chose to use the exemption on their vehicle, the maximum allowable exemption was $880 (100%), $660 (80-99%), $440 (60-79%) or $88 for any other veteran.  Any of these exemptions, can be used to make a donation to the Veterans Gift Home account if the veteran chooses to do so.

Website Visitor's Question

A recent visitor to our website asked, "Is there any action being taken by NOVS to increase the amount of property tax exemption for 100% disabled veterans or to completely exempt them from any and all property taxes?"

At our Legislative Symposium in March, the subject of veteran property taxes was discussed a number of times.  Following a thorough review of issues pertaining to veterans that could/should be addressed in the coming two years, two issues were prioritized relating to this subject.  Tentatively, our fourth most important issue to pursue at the 2009 session of the Nevada Legislature was a 100% exemption from property taxes for those 100% service connected veterans (and 100% Individually Unemployable (I.U.).  Also, the tentative seventh priority was to add an additional level of exemption to include those veterans who are 21-40% disabled to receive a greater disabled exemption.

If you are interested in obtaining updates to this subject and assist us as we work with the Legislature next session, I would encourage you to email DeeDra Cornelius (corneliusd@veterans.nv.gov) and request to be included on the email update list.
